Sitemap validator
Check an XML sitemap before search engines do. Enter its address: we download it, check it against the sitemap rules, compare it with your robots.txt and fetch the first 10 pages in it. No account needed.
What we check
- Download: the address works (HTTP 200), without redirects, and is not a web page in disguise.
- Format: valid XML, a <urlset> or <sitemapindex> with the sitemaps.org namespace, gzip files included.
- Limits: at most 50,000 addresses and 50 MB uncompressed.
- Addresses: complete, not too long, not listed twice, and in the sitemap's own folder on the same host.
- Tags: lastmod dates in W3C format and not in the future, valid changefreq and priority values.
- robots.txt: no addresses that Googlebot is not allowed to crawl, and a Sitemap: line.
- Pages: the first 10 pages load without redirects, noindex tags or another canonical address.
Our checker identifies itself as FreeSitemapGenerator-Validator. It only fetches the sitemap, your robots.txt and those few pages, and we don't store the results. Read why these rules matter in Sitemap vs robots.txt and Which sitemap tags matter.
