Short answer: you don't need to make one. Shopify, Wix and Squarespace all make a sitemap for you at /sitemap.xml on your own domain, for example https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml, and keep it up to date. Submit that address in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Shopify
- Your sitemap is at /sitemap.xml on your primary domain. It is an index that points to separate sitemaps for products, collections, pages and blog posts.
- You cannot edit the file. Products and pages that are not published to your online store stay out of it.
- While your store is password protected, search engines cannot read the sitemap or the pages in it.
Wix
- Your sitemap is at /sitemap.xml, again an index with a sitemap for each kind of page.
- Pages you hide from search engines in a page's SEO settings are left out.
- Wix's SEO setup can connect your site to Google Search Console and submit the sitemap for you.
Squarespace
- Your sitemap is at /sitemap.xml and changes by itself when you add or remove pages.
- Pages that are hidden from search results, disabled or password protected are left out.
Submitting it
- Open https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml in your browser, with your own domain, to see that it works.
- In Google Search Console, open Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml and press Submit.
- Do the same in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Can our generator still help?
For the sitemap itself, no: use the one your platform makes. Our spider is useful as a check. It finds pages the way a search engine does, by following links, so a page that is in your platform's sitemap but not in ours is a page nothing links to. And if part of your website runs somewhere else, such as a blog on another platform, our sitemap can cover that part.
