You can submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, but there is an easier way that works for every search engine at once: one line in your robots.txt.

Sitemap: https://www.example.com/sitemap.xml

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Use the full address of your sitemap, including https:// and your domain name.
  • The line can go anywhere in the file; it does not belong to a User-agent group.
  • More than one sitemap? Add one line for each, or one line for your sitemap index.
  • robots.txt only works at the root of your site: https://www.example.com/robots.txt, never in a folder.

The rules for robots.txt itself became an official internet standard in 2022, RFC 9309. The Sitemap line is not part of that standard, but Google, Bing and the other big search engines have supported it for years.

Using our automatic upload? Your sitemap keeps the same address every time, so the line in your robots.txt never has to change.
